For the 2004 Conference, we awarded (9) Room scholarships, each for 2-3 graduate students/community members per room, per night, or approximately 26 people total. We were able to accommodate requests for all applicants for the scholarship. Money for the room scholarships were donated by: Jesse Goodman, Susan Edgerton, Tom Poetter, Paul Shaker, Tom Kelly, Will Letts, and Nancy Brooks. Thank-you to all! This allowed us to stay within the $2,100 we had allotted from the 2003 conference monies and donations from people listed above. Next Year: For next year, we will consider developing more specific criteria for scholarship applicants including that: a) they be presenting in (2) sessions, b) send a letter of recommendation from a faculty member with their application, and c) basis of “need”. Scholarship recipients will be expected to assist at the registration and book tables during the 2005 conference in exchange for the award. We will consider presenting the awards in the form of “cash” for recipients to apply to their travel needs in general rather than attaching the monies to specific room reservations. The committee will select (10) recipients to be awarded the amount of $200.00 each. We will also provide extra monies to award specifically to community members presenting at the conference. Money may also be put aside to assist K-12 teachers wanting to attend the conference, in need of money to pay for a substitute teacher in their absence. The J.T. Sears Award will begin with papers submitted for the 2004 Conference proceedings. The committee (Dan Marshall and Morna McDermott) in collaboration with the Publications Committee developed a “rubric” for determining the quality and qualifications of each paper being reviewed.
