2004 Program Committee Report 2004 Program Committee members: Nancy Brooks (Chair), Margaret Latta, Morna Mcdermott, Tom Kelly, Kris Sloan, Ann Winfield. In addition to these members, Donna Breault, Kathleen Kesson, Louise Allen, and Chris Higgins served as strand chairs. Conference Theme Development: The committee began brainstorming theme ideas in early January. On Feb. 5 we presented an initial suggestion and some context to the Council for their input. After some discussion, which included the addition of a new strand for this year, the Council decided upon the theme in its final form: “(De)liberating Curriculum and Pedagogy: Exploring the Promise and Perils of ‘Scientifically-Based’ Approaches.” Special thanks go to Kris Sloan for initiating the substance for this year’s theme and to Kathleen Kesson for the idea for the (De)liberation in Retrospect strand. Call for papers: A theme narrative and strand descriptions were sent to the publications chair, Louise Allen, who finalized the call for papers and posted it to the general listserv. The deadline for submissions was initially set for July 1st, but later extended to July 20. This was not for lack of proposals, but simply in an effort to be fair to all, since we had received a number of requests for extensions. Proposal Review Process: Proposals were distributed to the various strand chairs for blind, external review. As in 2003, this year’s program committee had a “no reject” policy. However, several proposals were sent back for revision or clarifications. Proposals Numbers: The following includes the number of conference proposals submitted to each strand and the number of presenters represented. For comparison, the numbers from 2003 are also included. Strand Proposals Presenters* 2003 Proposals/Presenters Arts-Based 13 15 19 / 33 Creative Writing** 15 13 12 / 19 (De)liberation in Retrospect 6 13 ______ Public Moral Leadership 27 68 30 / 51 Social Action 24 30 18 / 23 Theory in Motion 33 68 34 / 72 * In some cases these numbers are approximate, due to a different number of panelists presenting than were actually listed in either the proposal or the program. * Formerly, the Collaborative Writing strand. Conference Program: The schedule for this year’s conference was distributed electronically to the Council on Sept. 10. After Council input, the schedule was posted to the larger list serve on Sept. 13. A hard copy of the program (with abstracts) was distributed at the conference. (I believe that in previous years this version has also been posted on the web prior to the conference.) This year we added pages to the program that included announcements, plus information pertaining to the selection of new Council members and the book editing team. Many thanks to Tom and the site committee for the professionally printed program! Audio-Visual Equipment requests (for the 111 presentations): LCD Projector: 16 Overhead: 17 TV/VCR: 5 Flipchart: 3 Town Hall Sessions: This year, two town hall sessions were scheduled in connection with the (De)liberation in Retrospect strand, one on Thursday just after lunch and one on Saturday just before lunch. In addition, whole group gatherings were scheduled for Thursday evening (JCP Town Hall), Friday evening (the Freedom Summer Panel), and for Saturday (the concluding session). Respectfully submitted, Nancy Brooks Program Committee Chair, 2004
